“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. So do not be attracted by
strange, new ideas.” -Hebrews 13:8-9 (NLT)
Chasing. Our world does so much of that these days. I think especially when people feel like life is out of control, they tend to want to control more. They chase the latest “new” thing to alleviate their unhappiness, fear, anxiety and more. There are SO many new fads, techniques, remedies offered virtually everywhere…on your phone, in your inbox, on a podcast or on the latest hot social media app of the moment.
But what if there is a better way? What if the “new” thing we all need is really something that’s been around since the foundation of the world and stood the test of time?
I love the scripture above from Hebrews, talking about our God being unchanging. I don’t know about you, but I can’t tell you how comforting that is to me. There is nothing in this world that does not change. We grow and age, circumstances change, people change. Heck, I live in an earthquake zone and even the ground moves and changes. No thank you! Jeepers, when you can’t trust the ground beneath you which appears so solid not to move…at that point, I think you need to look for a more solid foundation.
“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ”
-1 Corinthians 3:11 ESV
While we might want the latest and greatest something new to “fix our lives,” God sent His son, Jesus, to save and redeem us and that is enough. In fact, He is more than enough!
His word is alive and active for us today. The gospel is still the Good News, in fact these days in my life it is the greatest news! We don’t have to do this life on our own, in our own strength. I think many of us feel our strength flagging when we see all that is going on in the world, between wars, drought, famine, pandemics, disease, and the way we humans can treat one another. Thank God we don’t have to rely on ourselves to fix, control or even understand it all.
Instead we can stand steady, solid and unwavering as we soak in the Word of God. Let the Bible be our guide. As I have begun digging into studying the Bible more and more in the past few years, I’ve learn all kinds of new things about God. But they aren’t really new things…just things I did not know, that is…until I began to study.
Our God is unchanging and lives outside of time, so if we deem Bible teachings to be “old or outdated”, we shut out all of His infinite wisdom for our lives TODAY. When you read, ask the God to show you what He has for you today. Our God is outside of time, but He always is on time…even if it is His time and not ours. He knows exactly what you are dealing with, and why perhaps you are looking for something new to satiate that fear, desire, worry or anxiety.
I experienced so much freedom the day I came to the realization that all I tried wasn’t working and that I didn’t truly know what I needed. I just knew that all the things I was chasing weren’t cutting it and had let me down again and again and again. They were human fixes that were temporary at best. I came to the realization that I truly needed to turn my will and my life over to the care of the God who made me. When I did that, all sorts of things changed and were set into place in my life in such a grand way that I know I could have never have made happen on my own! I learned that I can trust God. The One who see’s the end from the beginning. And I can ask Him what it is that I need in this moment and get His unchanging, unrelenting, unconditional love to help with what I need.
I’m not saying you should never try anything new, but there is a distinction between trying something new and chasing every new thing. I’m saying, think about it, pray on it, use discernment to determine if this is something that you should do. More importantly, what does the Bible say about it?
Let’s be people who are steady, solid and who stay the course. Today let’s stop chasing the “newest” thing. We need the “One thing” and His name is Jesus Christ yesterday, today and forever.
Scripture references:
-Isaiah 46:10 NIV
I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’
